Introduction

 History
The establishment of Department of Literature at Nan Hua University was the result of many years’ preparation. From the very beginning, the goal of the department was set to provide solid knowledge of traditional Chinese literature as a foundation, upon which students can further explore a wide range of issues in the contemporary studies of literature. By combining the knowledge of Chinese as well as Western literary theories, students were expected to obtain an international view regarding literary studies. With the help and advices from scholars in various fields, the above project underwent several revisions before its final submission and was later approved by Ministry of Education in 1999. The department began to recruit students in the academic year 2000 and turned out to be the latest-established department of literature in Taiwan with brand new orientations and perspectives.
